All you need to know about coaching

By Shweta

What is Coaching?

  • Coaching is often misunderstood.
  • Some think it’s advice.
  • Some think it’s therapy.
  • Some think it’s motivation.
  • Some think it’s accountability.
  • It’s none of those.
  • Coaching is a structured, confidential, and non-judgmental space for awareness.
  • It is a conversation designed not to fix you, but to help you see more clearly.
  • Because clarity changes everything.

When to Work With a Coach?

Coaching is not only for moments of crisis. It is when your inner voice quietly admits, “I don’t want to keep going like this on autopilot.”

A few instances when my clients have reached out to me in the last 6 years:

You are successful, but not satisfied.
  • You’ve achieved what you set out to, yet something feels misaligned.
You feel stretched thin and want to reprioritise yourself.
  • Between work, family, and expectations, your own priorities take a backseat.
You are facing an important decision or transition.
  • A promotion, career pivot, return to work, or redefinition of success.
You notice patterns that no longer serve you.
  • Overworking, self-doubt, shrinking in certain rooms, or striving from fear.
You want to lead with greater calm and intention.
  • Not just perform well, but be equanimous and aligned while doing so.
You want to grow but are unsure about the direction.
  • Choose ambitions consciously, not FOMO driven or at the cost of burnout.

What happens in a Coaching Session?

  • Through conversations in a safe space,
  • You observe your thinking patterns.
  • Recognise self-sabotaging behaviours.
  • Challenge assumptions and inner narratives.
  • Identify beliefs that influence your choices and decisions.
  • Separate external expectations (shoulds and musts) from internal desires (wants.
  • Clarify values and priorities, and explore possibilities to choose/act differently.
  • Coaching is not about hacks and frameworks but an invitation to reflect and support who you are becoming.

Benefits of Coaching

The next question often is how will I benefit from coaching. From deepening self-awareness to transcending conditioned thinking patterns and actions, coaching is a transformative process that reaps several rewards. However, here are a few common buckets where my clients have seen transformations

  1. A Calm Mind – Coaching offers us a pause amidst a busy and noisy world. This pause helps us go inward, reflect on what’s happening, and calmly choose our responses rather than react impulsively to every trigger.
  2. Clear Direction – We often know what we don’t want. The challenge is in being clear about what we truly want. Coaching is a great way to generate clarity from within rather than pursue fomo-driven ambitions.
  3. Cultivate Confidence – Life has a way of knocking us down over the years, but how do we keep our heads held high and rise again and again? Coaching helps unpack the emotional overwhelm surrounding life’s precious lessons so we gain confidence and grow through life’s adversities.
  4. Rewire Beliefs and Behaviours – As adults, we often get set in our ways of thinking and doing and it doesn’t always serve us. Coaching helps rewire our conditioning to rewrite beliefs and evolve our behaviours so we are not repeating patterns of self-sabotage.
  5. Self-Regulate Emotions – The ebbs and flows of life spare none. But we can avoid the chaos of an emotional rollercoaster with every turn of events and recover faster with sustained awareness. Coaching creates space to notice our emotions without being swept away by them, allowing us to respond with intention rather than react from overwhelm

Coaching is not being told what to do, but a means to access your own clarity on patterns that no longer serve you.

This is not about becoming someone new. It is about expanding your identity while holding yourself with compassion.

My Coaching Philosophy

I believe the answers we are seeking is not missing but is buried under expectations, doubt, and fear. Through coaching, I offer a safe space that allows us to turn down the noise and tune in to our inner wisdom.

I coach because I believe awareness is transformative. When we begin to see our patterns with honesty and compassion, we no longer strive from fear or shrink from doubt. We can then thrive consciously.

What I wish for each of you, and what I support my clients in cultivating, is success that does not come at the cost of inner fulfilment. Confidence that is visible, yet rooted in quiet self-trust. Clarity to discern what is truly yours to pursue and what is not. The steadiness to remain calm even when the world around you feels chaotic. And the gentleness to treat yourself with compassion, without slipping into guilt or shame.

My Qualifications

Coaching is governed by the International Coaching Federation (ICF). I am a PCC-accredited or Level 2 coach and have coached over 100+ professionals and 550+ hours.

Before being a Coach, I spent 5+ years as a Corporate Banker and a Strategist as a part of Tata Group’s flagship leadership program, Tata Administrative Services.

My first book, Far From Fine, offers a roadmap to transition from living life on autopilot to being intentional. The book was published by Hay House India.

FAQs

How do I know when I should seek a Coach?
  • When you become aware that something needs to shift in your life. Some (but not an exhaustive) list of instances when you can consider coaching:
  • You’re feeling stuck/stagnant in your personal/professional life.
  • You’re facing an important decision or transition.
  • You notice patterns like overworking or shrinking in certain spaces.
  • You want to lead with more calm and less reactivity.
  • You sense you’re capable of more and do not feel at peace.
Can a Coach really fix my life?
  • No Coach has a magic wand to fix anybody’s life. As a coach, I can help you evoke awareness to clarify your stuckness, emotions, and aspirations, and open possibilities for choice and aligned action.
  • But there’s no shortcut to inner work. You’ll have to take the responsibility and put in the effort to see the changes you truly desire.
Can Coaching still help if I don’t know what I want in my life?
  • Coaching does not require a fully formed vision. It provides the structure and safety to explore that transition thoughtfully.
  • A Coach can help you.
  • Untangle external expectations from your own desires
  • Identify patterns that have shaped your choices.
  • Clarify what truly matters in this season of your life.
  • Create space to hear your own voice without noise.
  • All of this eventually supports finding clarity, purpose, and meaning in the current phase of your life. If you are in that in-between liminal space, where you are not content with where you are but don’t know what next, coaching can help you navigate it with intention rather than urgency.
How many sessions will I need to see results?
  • This depends on person to person. To see results in our external world, we need to make different choices. Our choices are influenced by our inner narratives - our beliefs, thoughts and feelings and these are what we need to rewire to see results. The deeper our desire to make change happen, the faster the results.
  • However, these are narratives that we’ve built over decades, so rewiring them will require conscious, patient, and persistent efforts. The question is how intense your desire to shift is and how much you are willing to commit to see it through. The sessions will ensure you stay on the path, be compassionate as you walk ahead, and hold yourself accountable to see the change you desire.
I don’t have any problems in my life. Do I still work with a Coach?
  • This is the best time to partner with a Coach because we are not desperate to problem-solve. There’s always more to life that we can unlock, and the possibilities to live to our fullest strengths are endless.
  • If life is going well and you’re wondering what's next, a Coach can help you find that next best thing at work or in life. If you’re clear on what's next, a Coach can help you work towards arriving at that goal faster.
